I have read these Golden Books over and over since I was a small child. They are both illustrated by Eloise Wilkins, and they are definitely the 1950’s style of children’s books! They can be hard to find – especially We Help Daddy! But if you come across them, they are precious!
Both books have an older brother and little sister, and in both stories they spend the day helping. In Mini Stein’s We Help Daddy, the children spend the day doing yard work, washing the car, washing the dog, and fixing things around the house. (And Daddy has a pipe firmly in his mouth throughout most of the book!)
In We Help Mommy by Jean Cushman, the children get dressed, make beds, straighten the house, do the laundry, go to the grocery store, and make a special treat for Daddy. It is all very orderly and comforting, and Daddy makes sure to tell the little girl how much he enjoyed the treat she made for him.
I think this is where some of my dreams of being a homemaker may have started. And it looks like my girls are enjoying them as much as I did.
