Book Review of Word After Word After Word by Patricia MacLachlan

Book Review of Word After Word by Patricia MacLachlan

My friends, David and Gracie, recommended Word After Word After Word to me. It was written by Patricia MacLachlan who also wrote the Sarah, Plain and Tall books (among many others). I really enjoyed this book, but it wasn’t one of Liam’s favorites. I think I would have enjoyed it at his age (11) mainly because I was an aspiring writer and had lots of thoughts and emotions that I felt I needed to express. You can click the link below to see what Liam has to say about Word After Word After Word.

18 Great Classic Books to Read to Your Kids

18 Classic Books to Read to Children

As you know, I am a huge fan of reading to my kids, even after they can read on their own. It’s a fun way to spend time together and it gives me the opportunity to immediately talk about issues that come up in the stories we read. Today, I thought I would share with you some of the classic books that I think make great read-alouds. There are links to my in-depth reviews on each book, and an Amazon link, in case you want to pick up a copy of your own. I hope this inspires some cozy times and creates great memories with you and your kids as you introduce them to some great classics!

Poetry For Kids

Instead of my usual Wednesday Picture Book Review today, I wanted to share with you an often overlooked genre of picture books that your kids will probably enjoy: Poetry!

Poetry For Kids at What My Kids Read

My kids love poetry! I should probably qualify that statement by saying they actually enjoy the poetry we have read out loud to them and the poetry we have given them to read. They aren’t tackling Paradise Lost or The Lady Of The Lake, but they are all eager to listen when I sit down to read a book of children’s poetry. We even have a couple audio books of great children’s poetry that our kids listen to as a part of their learning. The poems are read by the authors or by actors, and it has been so fun to hear one child or another start quoting a poem in the voice of the actor only to have another sibling join in to finish. Maybe we’re just easily entertained, but I think it’s pretty fun. :)

Book Review of Frindle by Andrew Clements

Andrew Clements’ first chapter book, Frindle, has been around for a while, but I only heard about it recently. It was published in 1998, but I kept seeing it at the top of Amazon’s bestsellers for the 8-10 crowd, and I thought Paul might enjoy it. There are some illustrations in the copy I read, and it was fun to see the work of Brian Selznick (of The Invention of Hugo Cabret fame – you can read my review of that book here)

Book Review of Fortunately, The Milk by Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is a really prolific writer. I’ve heard great things about his books for adults and kids, but this is the first book of his that I have read. Fortunately, The Milk was published in the fall of 2013. It was highly recommended by a reader (thanks, Tiffany!), and we really enjoyed it!
