Family Snapshots

What My Kids Read: Family Snapshots

This week was very hard emotionally. On Wednesday, we learned that some friends of ours that inspired and shaped our Christian walk – and really even how we view family now – had lost their 13 year old son in a tragic accident. It’s been a week of lots of crying and praying, not knowing what to say, and holding our kids extra close.

To be honest, it’s been a week of me questioning God. I still don’t have all the answers – probably won’t this side of Heaven – but my childhood best friend, Jessica, raised an excellent point that really helped me. I wish I could quote her directly, but she said something to the effect of “What if death isn’t as big of a deal as we think it is? What if it’s only a big deal to us because we so dearly miss those who die?”

It made me think of The Last Battle (that’s an affiliate link) in C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. Prince Tirian and his force are fighting a battle and doing everything they can to stay out of a stable where the evil god, Tash, is hiding. Slowly, one by one, they are all forced to enter that stable, and they find that, instead of the dark stable with Tash, they are in a beautiful land. They soon learn that it is true Narnia, that the Narnia they had known and loved was only a shadow of this true Narnia. So, this week, as we deeply mourned, I was reminded that death only looks dark and scary on the outside.

I’m 8 weeks pregnant this week. Morning sickness is in full effect. I had read a compelling article about how morning sickness can be caused by a magnesium deficiency, and I had been trying magnesium. Maybe I’ll write about it more another time because I did a very thorough experiment on myself, and it has definitely not helped me. This little one is growing, though, and I am very grateful for this pregnancy – even for the morning sickness.

How has your week been? I hope it has been less emotional than ours.

Thanks so much!

  1. May God’s love wash over you in this time of heartbreak and sorrow.

I knew something was wrong when there had been no new postings on your blog for several days; when a blogger puts up new things every day and then suddenly stops, you know it’s for a reason. Take care of yourself and I know you will be a blessing to your friends in their time of trial.

My cleaning lady was so sick during her first trimester that she had to give up all her clients and didn’t leave the house except to go to church. But later in her pregnancy she was able to get back to normal in everything. Just this afternoon she delivered a beautiful baby girl, so here’s hoping your pregnancy takes the same turn.

    Praying for your friends.

So what do you think?
