Dr. Seuss’ Happy Birthday to You! is a birthday tradition I grew up with. My mom has fond memories of her father reading it on birthdays, and we read it most birthdays growing up, so naturally, we read it to the kids on their birthdays now. I almost have it memorized, but it never gets old.
We only read it on birthdays. My parents kept it out of reach to keep it special, but my kids will pull it out from time to time to look at the photos, and I only read it to them on birthdays.
It’s classic Seuss with crazy characters and funny rhyme schemes.
“Today is your birthday! Today You are You! So what if it costs me a thousand or two.”
Just in case you’re uncomfortable with it, there is a tiny naked child diving into the “Mustard-Off Pools” and drying with a towel. None of our kids seem overly curious about it, and it never bothered me.
It’s a fun tradition to always make time to read this book on each child’s birthday. This year, Liam read it to me on my birthday, which was precious to me.
That’s the main tradition we’ve stuck with through the years. We also try to give our kids experiences instead of lots of gifts or big parties for their birthdays, and we have been fairly consistent about that, but Happy Birthday to You! is always a non-negotiable. It makes an appearance at least 4 times a year, and I love that this tradition goes back to my grandpa.
What about you? Do you have any birthday traditions in your family?
