King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub is a Caldecott Honor book written by Audrey Wood and beautifully illustrated by Don Wood, the same team that created one of our favorites, The Napping House (which I reviewed here). It is about a king who will not get out of the bathtub. His page calls for help to get King Bidgood out of the bathtub, and his courtiers (and the Queen) take turns trying to get him out of the bathtub. For example, the Queen tells him it’s time to get out for lunch, so the King calls for lunch to be served in the tub.
Brontë’s favorite was when the Knight tells the King, “Get out! It is time to battle!” and the King brings the battle to the tub. (She thought it was pretty funny that the Knight’s army is clearly losing.) After several more attempts to lure the King out, the page finally has enough and pulls the plug on the tub. The King leaves easily after that.
We enjoyed this book. The plot was funny, and the illustrations were not only beautiful, but also funny. Everyone has a unique expression on their faces as the King responds to each invitation to leave the tub, and the scenes in the tub are lavish.
For parents who might be concerned, bubbles strategically cover the King. At the very end he runs out with a towel around his waist, and you can see the side of his bottom. Also, when the knight exits the bathtub, all soggy in his armor, his pants are around his ankles, but he has long shorts on underneath.
All in all, a very fun read! Steve, thank you for the recommendation!
