What Mom Reads: Review of Bread & Wine by Shauna Niequist

Bread & Wine by Shauna Niequist Book Review by What My Kids Read

I’m not sure where I first heard about this book, but I instantly put it on my Amazon wishlist, and my wonderful in-laws got it for me this Christmas. I have not had much time for leisure reading lately, but Bread & Wine by Shauna Niequist was exactly what I needed to pull away from the crisis of the moment. It was like reading letters from a close friend I hadn’t seen for a while. I now feel like I’m practically best friends with Shauna Niequist, even though we’ve never met. 😉

She quotes A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh and The Supper of the Lamb by Father Robert Farrar Capon, two of my favorite books about food, so I knew I was reading something by a kindred spirit. Each chapter is short, talking about a memory or lesson learned and most chapters end with a recipe that sounds fantastic. I could easily read several chapters in one sitting, or I could read one before bedtime, and just savor the words. I purposefully took a longer time to read this book than I normally would because it is the kind of book that is perfect to linger over. It is written from a Christian perspective, and I really loved how she wove Scriptural truths in with stories of meals with friends. The subtitle is “A love letter to life around the table with recipes,” and that is exactly what Bread & Wine is.

I haven’t tried any of the recipes yet, but I have several flagged to try over the next few weeks. One of my cousins is an excellent cook, and she said that she has loved every recipe she tried – which is very high praise! In the back of the book, there is a list of “Sample Menus for Entertaining,” divided by seasons, and I am now just wishing for some time and money to try one full menu.

Bread & Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes is a lovely book that would make a great gift. A friend of mine told me that she gave this book with a bottle of wine and a loaf of bread, and I am definitely planning to steal that idea!
