The Napping House by Audrey Wood

What My Kids Read: The Napping House I’m sure you’ve heard of The Napping House, but it is such a favorite at our house, I had to share it today. One of my sisters had a kindergarten teacher that seemed like the most fun teacher in the world. She introduced our family to this funny book, and it was another must-have once I had children of my own.

In case you haven’t heard of it yet, it is one of those books that builds one element on top of another: “And on that child, there is a dog, a dozing dog on a dreaming child on a snoring granny on a cozy bed in a napping house where everyone is sleeping.”

And, at the end, it all falls apart because of a wakeful flea and turns into a house where no one is sleeping!

What My Kids Read: The Napping House

I have not met a child that didn’t break into a grin of anticipation when I point out that wakeful flea poised on top of the “slumbering mouse on a snoozing cat on a dozing dog on a dreaming child on a snoring granny on a cozy bed in a napping house where everyone is sleeping.”

It’s a very fun book to read together, especially right before naptime. 😉

  1. If you can believe this I never heard of it and I have 4 children whom I homeschool and have read loads of picture books too. I will have to keep my eyes out for this one; looks really cute although we are kind of past the age for it.

    • Jennifer, I guess some picture books slip through the cracks. I had never read Goodnight Moon until my second one was born. The Napping House sure is a fun one to read out loud – at least you know now! :)

  2. I have such good memories of using this as a read aloud when I was teaching! Are you familiar with “King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub,” another picture book by Don and Audrey Wood? It’s one of my favorite picture books, great for read alouds (or more correctly LAUGH alouds) because it’s one of the funniest picture books I’ve ever read. The illustrations are a feast of humorous visual detail – the story is totally ridiculous. Just thought I’d throw out that title to you if you weren’t familiar with it, because I think it’s one you’d really enjoy!

  3. Steve, thanks for the recommendation! I’ve requested “King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub” from the library. Looking forward to reading it!

So what do you think?
