Pigs From A To Z was the first Arthur Geisert book we discovered, at a library book sale when Liam was quite young. We loved it so much, that we snatched up Arthur Geisert’s Pigaroons (which I have reviewed before here). We have become big fans of Geisert’s intricate illustrations and the exploits of the pigs he draws.

Pigs from A to Z has a little story of 7 piglets all working together to build a treehouse. You look for all the piglets on every page (they can tricky to spot!). One letter is hidden in 5 places on every page, with 1 previous letter and 1 of the coming letter. There is a key in the back to check your answers, in case you cannot find the letters. This is not a quick read aloud. If your kids are like mine, they will want to do everything on every page. It can easily take 30 minutes or more to find everything, so it’s definitely a book to pull out when your toddler is napping (or distracted nearby!).
The etching-style illustrations are intricate enough to spend time studying each page. There are little things happening on most pages, so there are fun details to notice while hunting for the letters. The boys enjoyed this book for several years, and I still find Paul looking through it on occasion.
Pigs From A To Z is a fun book! I wouldn’t recommend it as the first ABC book for beginning readers because the letters can be a challenge to find, but now that Brontë has a good handle on her letters, she has been enjoying this book and I find her looking through it much more often.
Here is Brontë telling you all about Pigs from A to Z (We ran out of space on the camera for recording at the very end, but you’ll get the idea.) 😉
If you’d like to read this book, your library might have it. It is out of print, but you might check with your local used bookstore. If you are planning a purchase on Amazon, would you please use our link?
