I came across I Want My Hat Back on Pinterest and thought it sounded really cute, so we checked it out from the library this week, and the librarian told me her family loves this book – good reviews all around! So, I’m happy to say that we really enjoyed this book as well!

I Want My Hat Back tells the story of a bear that is looking for his hat. He asks all of the woodland animals, including a rabbit with a hat on his head. Finally, it dawns on the bear where he last saw his hat, and we see on the next page that he is sitting where the rabbit was, with his hat back on his head.
A squirrel asks the bear if he has seen the rabbit, and the bear defensively denies seeing the rabbit and asks the squirrel not to ask any more questions. The text implies that the bear had eaten the rabbit, but some of us think he is just sitting on him.
Jon Klassen is both writer and illustrator of this cute book. I really loved the illustrations! They are definitely in the style that is popular right now – looks like simple watercolors (but I could never paint anything so cute with my watercolors – looks simple, not easy!).
The animals show very little expression throughout the book, with the exception of the moment when the bear realizes where he has seen his hat. I love that the page is red as he realizes the rabbit has his hat – I could actually identify with that exact feeling!
The text is very simple with enough repetition to make it a good early reader. Brontë (who just started learning how to read) will probably be able to read this book on her own by the summer.
All in all, I Want My Hat Back is a cute picture book that all 4 kids have enjoyed reading through.
Here’s what Brontë had to say about I Want My Hat Back:
If you’d like to read this book, I’m sure your library has it. If you want to purchase it, your local bookstore should have it in stock, but if you are planning a purchase on Amazon, would you please use our link?
It won’t cost you extra and it helps us a little. Thanks!
